This episode of the Replacement Level Podcast features Ben Reiter. Ben is a senior writer at Sports Illustrated and the author of the new book Astroball. He joined me to discuss his book and how the Astros went from a laughingstock franchise to World Series champions.
Ben spoke about Jeff Lunhow’s initial pitch to Astros owner, Jim Crane that ultimately landed him the GM job. He also spoke about how Jeff and his colleague Sig Mejdal created a player ranking system that combined advanced metrics with previously unquantifiable observations from scouts. He also detailed how Jeff runs his draft room, the Verlander trade, and Carlos Beltran’s importance to the team last year.
